5 Notable Russian Inventions
1. Periodic Table of Elements
Building on the idea of arranging elements by their relative atomic masses, in the late 1800's Dimitry Mendeleyev (pictured below) created the standard still used today.
2. High-octane gasoline
The process for manufacturing this from regular octane gasoline was developed by Vladimir Ipatieff. The process was critical to sucess in WWII, allowing U.S. planes to outpace German ones.
3. Synthetic Rubber
Sergei Lebedev invented a way to synthesize rubber based on grain or potato ethanol. By 1940, the USSR had the world's largest synthetic rubber factories.
Designed in 1947 by Mikhail Kalashnikov, it was one of the world's first assault rifles and is certainly the most durable and widely used weapon of its type in history.
The scientific process for separating and analyzing chemical components of a mixture was first developed in the nineteenth century by Russian botanist Mikhail Tsvet.
